Nothing leaves the device

Recognition runs in a WebAssembly OCR engine inside the tab, and the record is written to your browser's own database. Your receipts are never transmitted, because there is nowhere to transmit them to.

Details filled in for you

Merchant, date, subtotal, tax and total are extracted automatically. Anything the parser is unsure about is flagged for a quick check.

Your data stays yours

Records live in your browser's database. Export to CSV or JSON whenever you want, and take them anywhere.

How it works

  1. Photograph the receipt. The camera button opens your rear camera and captures a full-resolution still.
  2. The image gets cleaned up. Greyscale, contrast stretching and local thresholding, which matters more for accuracy than most people expect.
  3. Text is recognised on-device. A few seconds on a recent phone.
  4. You confirm the details. Everything is pre-filled and editable. Nothing is saved until you say so.

Honest limitations

Open-source OCR on a phone photo of a crumpled thermal receipt is not magic. Totals and dates are often right on clear photos; merchant names and line items need correcting more often. That is why the confirmation screen exists rather than silently saving whatever was read. You must check every field against the paper (or PDF) before you rely on it.

Receipt Scanner is not liable for incorrect scans, missed fields, or any payment, reimbursement, tax, legal, or compliance issue that results from using the app. It is a free assistance tool—not accounting, tax, or payment software. Full terms: Terms of Service.

Browsers can also clear local storage to reclaim space, so treat the export button as part of the workflow rather than an afterthought. More on durability and photo quality in the guides.

Common questions

  • Do my receipts get uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is processed by an OCR engine running inside your browser tab, and the expense record is written to your browser’s local database. There is no account, no server and no network request carrying your data.

  • How accurate is the scanning?

OCR can misread fields. Totals and dates are often right on clear retail photos; merchant names and line items fail more often. You must review and correct every field before saving. Receipt Scanner is not liable for incorrect scans or for any payment, tax, or legal issue that follows from using the data. See the Terms of Service.

  • Can I rely on this for taxes, expenses claims, or payments?

No. The app is a personal assistance tool only—not tax, legal, or payment software. You are solely responsible for verifying amounts against the original receipt and for any filing, reimbursement, or payment you make. We accept no liability for those outcomes.

  • Does it work offline?

Yes, once you have loaded it once. The recognition engine is cached on your device, so scanning works with no connection at all.

  • Where is my data actually stored?

In IndexedDB, the database built into your browser, on the device you used. It is not synced between your phone and laptop. Because browsers can clear storage to reclaim space, export a CSV or JSON copy periodically.

  • What does it cost?

Nothing, and there is no account to create. The recognition runs on your own hardware, so there are no per-scan costs to pass on.
